SOCIAL COHESION

“It was while reading about the history of Pointe Ste Charles that I realized to what extent we are all, for the most part, immigrants’’

“And to value the contributions of each one of us in the history of the neighbourhoods can be an important means to consolidating relationships between various communities’’

My commitments from the 2013 platform
Promote the creation of public spaces and the holding of events conducive to intergenerational and multicultural exchanges among citizens.

Work to build ties between these groups especially in the context of major events and through highlighting the rich history of our neighbourhoods.

  MY ACHIEVEMENTS

Propose motions to the South West Council intended to promote diversity and create links between communities.

Organize an annual event in the South West to highlight the diversity and contribution of immigrants through Quebec’s history.

Organize an Open Door event in a Hindu temple in Émard.

Organize a conference on the Montreal Muslim community in collaboration with Projet Montréal,

To propose that the city of Montreal recognize and provide support to the places of worship,
following recent unfortunate events in the borough.

Particularly shaken following the attacks in France, I submitted two motions to the borough council of the Southwest:

january 2015 Motion pour valoriser la diversité montréalaise et le raprochement entre les MontréalaiSEs   november 2015 Motion pour la solidarité et la création de liens sociaux au sein de la diversité de l'arrondissement du Sud-Ouest

I organized an annual event that was funded by the borough, and that recognizes and celebrates diversity and the many benefits of immigration throughout Quebec’s history.

In the fall of 2010, I organized on behalf of Projet Montréal conference on the Montreal Muslim community with:

Frédéric Castel A researcher at UQAM on religious issues
Samira Laouni Communication pour l’Ouverture et le Rapprochement Interculturel - COR
Haroun Bouazzi Association des MusulmanEs et Arabes pour la Laïcité - AMAL
Sophie Thiébaut Haroun Bouazzi Samira Laouni Frédéric Castel Suzie Miron

A Hindu community bought a building to host their community and religious activities. A zoning change was necessary because the building had previously included a grocery on the ground floor.

With the help of my colleagues Anne-Marie Sigouin et Alain Vaillancourt, I organized an Open Door event with the Hindu community and invited the neighbourhood to attend.

  Le Village des Tanneries

When the archeological remnants of the Village des tanneries were discovered, I tabled this motion in the borough council, which was then presented to Montreal city council by my colleague Anne-Marie Sigouin.

“The discovery of remnants of the original Village des tanneries served to remind us of our collective roots, and of how others before us had built Saint-Henri and Quebec. It is essential to remember that we are strongest when we work together, as we all have the same goal of buildingr for the future.’’
