PRESENTATION OF SOPHIE THIÉBAUT

COHERENCE • TENACITY • RIGUOUR
It is with these strong qualities that Sophie Thiébaut has been involved in the Southwest for decades,
whether as a citizen, as a community organizer or as borough councillor.

46-years-old, mom to a “grown up” 11-year-old daughter.

16 years of community involvement in the Southwest neighbourhoods.

8 years of working professionally in the community sector
in every neighbourhood within the SouthWest:
  • Little Burgundy   • Saint Henri
  • Pointe-Saint-Charles   • Côte-Saint-Paul
Founder of Mobilisation Turcot in 2007.

Background:

Originally from France, a social worker by training and mother of a wonderful daughter, Sophie Thiébaut moved here 14 years ago and was instantly attracted to the Southwest because of it’s social and cultural diversity, it’s proud history of social activism, and it’s fierce community spirit.
Sophie started as a grassroots activist, working in popular education centres as of 2001. This community involvement eventually brought her to actively participate in one of Montréal’s strongest mobilizations: ‘’ Mobilisation Turcot’’ lobbied against a highway expansion project; it is something that she has continued to support in her capacity as a borough councillor.
When elected as borough councillor, Sophie Thiébaut kept true to her core belief that citizen participation is essential to effective municipal governance and thus, she has continued to maintain close ties to the community. She is the type of person who is able to vigorously defend her ideas, and is able to tackle highly complex issues with ease and confidence.
Sophie Thiébaut is known for her core values and for having produced tangible results over the course of her two mandates.

University Education:

Graduated with a diploma in community organization management and in social economy (Paris and UQAM).

Community Involvement:

Member of the Municipal Commission on Social Development and Montréal Diversity for six years.
Acting Chair of the Southwest’s Urban Planning Advisory Committee (Comité consultatif d'urbanisme)

“For me, there is little difference between working in the community and in politics. My role is to be a spokesperson, to put the concerns of my fellow citizens at the heart of political priorities. It is to truly change my neighbourhood, and the lives of people.”

In 2009, Sophie Thiébaut was the only Projet Montréal candidate to be elected in the SouthWest borough and she did so with a mere $500 campaign budget. In 2014, she was reelected to a second term with an overwhelming 2000 vote lead.

“Thank you to the voters, and to everyone who helped elect me with 46 per cent of the ballots in the last election. That recognition is important to me. With this report, I hope to continue to earn your confidence.”

Projet Montréal Leadership Race:

In the Projet Montréal leadership race at the end of 2016, Sophie chose to support Valérie Plante’s candidacy, due to Valérie’s socially progressive positions and her commitment to social housing investment.
